Thimbleberry Farm & Fleece is pleased to announce the launch of our Pasture Raised Poultry Community Supported Agriculture Program, providing sustainable, nutritious, humanely-raised chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and game birds for our members at preferred pricing plans.

 

Currently, we raise both commercial (hybrids or artificially inseminated ) and Heritage (natural breeding, antique) breeds, offering Poultry shares combining the best of both types or only Heritage breeds. Although we raise both varieties in a natural, pastured environment, producing the most robust flavor, maximum nutrition, and incredible meat texture, we encourage our members to support the heritage breeds for a true culinary delight  and to increase community awareness of sustainable farming practices in our Northern Michigan climate, as done in generations past.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So...How does this all work?

 

Think of us as your Personal Farmers!!!! We are responsible for the brooding of the chicks, the daily hauling of feed and water to the day range shelters, the midnight predator patrols, etc. Everything it takes to put a nutritious, flavor packed bird on your supper table!!!

 

Poultry Share Members, by purchasing ahead and in monthly installments, provide the capital necessary to purchase the day old chicks,  the feed and other supplies. In exchange, members receive a preferred CSA discount, first attention and choice of harvested poultry, and are encouraged to visit the farm and see for themselves how the very food they put on the dinner table is grown.

 

The goal of the Thimbleberry Farm’s Poultry shares is not only to provide our members with delicious, natural locally-raised poultry, but also to work toward a wholly sustainable farming practice of breeding and maintaining critically endangered Heritage Breed Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks, and Geese.  Additional benefits of our goal will reduce the carbon foot-print of air-lifting day old poultry from the hatchery to our farm and help to re-establish the small family diverse products farm-to-table link that was pushed nearly to extinction in the 20th century’s rush to one product manufacturing style corporation farms.

Homesteader's Delight    

 

This package provides a great selection of a variety of birds to our

members. Combining the mouth watering flavor of our broad breasted

roasting chickens with enough tender fryers for summer family

barbeques or picnics, this package also includes your Holiday birds,

a Thanksgiving Turkey sure to bring back fond memories of your

grandmother’s Thanksgiving table, and even a Christmas Goose, a

wonderful treat of a by-gone Holiday Tradition. To round out the

package, a few Peking Ducks provide a succulent autumn feast.

Homesteader's Delight   - The Heritage Edition 

 

This package provides all the great selection and variety of our

Homesteader’s Delight package, with Heritage Breed

Dark Cornish and Bourbon Red Turkeys replacing the

commercial breed birds.

 

Heritage Breeds of poultry breed naturally, have long

productive life spans, and a slow growth rate, giving the birds

time to develop a strong skeletal structure and healthy organs

prior to building muscle mass. This growth rate is identical to

that of the commercial varieties of the first half of the

20th century.

 

The extra growth time provides superior meat qualities and a
